Henry Lawson was the quintessential Australian author of both prose and poetry, Henry Lawson is embedded in our literary fabric. However, his personal life was far from untroubled, and in 1901 he was diagnosed with Bipolar Affective Disorder. He spent several years in mental health institutions.
This document A History of the Lunatic Reception Centre in Darlinghurst will give you a greater understanding of the part that Mental Health played in Lawson’s life and inspired the organising committee to do something to celebrate his life.
Warren Fahey the Keynote speaker for the day, his session is titled: Travels with Henry Lawson in the Outback and the Big Smoke.
For over half a century, Warren Fahey has been digging into Australian history as a folklore collector, author, broadcaster, record & video producer and occasional performer. He uses songs, recitations and stories as signposts to our history. He is the recipient of more awards and honours than you can poke a stick at but prefers to say he is a ‘graduate of the Dingo University of the Outback’.
